The AVL was the first Classic 500 of the unit-construction era, pairing the new fuel-injected aluminium 'lean-burn' 500 engine with the old 1950s Bullet look: one-colour paint, hand-painted pinstripes and a hand-lined tank. It brought a five-speed box, better handling, lower emissions and improved economy compared with the older Bullets, and it was kick-start only.
